Update May 13, 2020

District Manager Jeff Nickell met with the County Public Health Department on Monday, May 11, 2020.  Unfortunately, the news for us is not good.

Our gymnasium, weight room, outdoor fitness equipment, pavilions and playgrounds must remain closed. The County of Kern starts a new two-week stay-at-home order whenever there is a death in the county. The latest deaths were reported today. The order indicates any activity requiring use of shared equipment or not conducive to social distancing cannot take place.

Social gatherings are not allowed, including for soccer and basketball.

THE BIGGEST NEWS IS THAT THE POOL WILL NOT BE OPEN THIS SUMMER. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE EARLIEST ANY POOLS IN KERN COUNTY CAN OPEN WILL BE SOMETIME IN JULY. THIS IS SO SAD. NOT ONLY DO OUR YOUTH FLOCK TO THE POOL EACH SUMMER, BUT OUR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE YOUTH RELY ON THE INCOME FROM BEING LIFEGUARDS.

CORONAVIRUS NOTICE UPDATE 3-19-2020

Please read the following notification from Jeff Nickell, District Manager

March 19, 2020

Hello McFarland Residents,

MRPD is a special district of the State of California.  We provide a safe and clean environment for a diverse range of recreation resources and programs that benefit the health and well-being of our residents.

During this time of uncertainty and the need to ‘flatten’ the spread of COVID-19, the McFarland Recreation and Park District is taking the following steps to ensure public and staff safety:

1.       MRPD office closed to the public as of 3-20-20. You can call or email questions. You can also go online to www.mcfarlandrpd.com for the latest updates. There is a ‘contact us’ button that will send messages straight to me.

2.       Basketball courts, soccer and softball fields are closed as of 3-20-20 (this is due to the guidelines set forth by public health officials to limit gatherings of people and being mindful of ‘social distancing)

** Note. We are serious about this closure and will do what is necessary to ensure that people are safe. We do not want to act, but if gatherings are still taking place, staff will remove basketball hoops and lock soccer goals. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM GATHERING.

3.       All restrooms in the parks will be closed as of 3-20-20. We cannot control who uses them and being on Highway 99, we get many ‘out-of-area’ visitors. This may be extreme, but I would rather fall on the side of caution, then regret.

4.       Only essential staff will be working to limit exposure. Rest assured parks will be taken care of during this time.

5.       As of 3-19-20, we have postponed our spring programs. These programs may be canceled depending on ‘orders/mandates’ from the President or Governor (or their public health officials).

As you know, I already closed the gymnasium, weight room, Fun Skills and all playground/exterior fitness equipment. I am in regular contact with the the City of McFarland, MUSD, California Special Districts Association and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. It is paramount that we work together. I will continue to put the safety of our people above anything else.

I met with staff today and rest assured they are working hard for you. Our grounds and maintenance staff will be focused on mowing and edging, but projects have been identified to move MRPD forward and in a position to have even better facilities when the COVID-19 outbreak becomes a thing of the past (or is at least controlled). Thank you for your support and patience. I look forward to getting back to ‘normal’ and providing our many services to our wonderful community. BE SAFE!

Sincerely, Jeff Nickell, MA, District Manager

Please visit our partners' websites for their latest information related to COVID-19.

EARLIER NOTIFICATION

Monday, March 16, 2020

The McFarland Recreation and Park District continues to be in regular communication with Kern County Public Health, as well as the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and other local, state and federal agencies, related to the rapidly changing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation that our state and nation is facing.

Update: Following the orders of state and county health officials, the McFarland Recreation and Park District is postponing all public gatherings at all our facilities as a means of slowing the spread of COVID-19. This includes large and small events, sports, classes and meetings (per California Department of Public Health). All current and upcoming sport leagues, instructional classes and meetings are postponed until further notice.

Further, based on information from the Governor’s Office, all facility rentals are cancelled as well. I will keep you posted as to when MRPD can resume normal activities.

UPDATE: Fun Skills will be closed starting Wednesday, March 18, 2020. MRPD is following the actions of the McFarland Unified School District. We both provide services to our youth and are working in concert to ensure the safety of our community.

MRPD’s top priority continues to be the health and safety of all our participants, visitors and staff, and we take this responsibility very seriously. We understand the decision may cause hardships for some guests and families, but we must follow the orders of health officials.

Although no cases have been reported in Kern County, it has been found in Tulare County and Los Angeles County. Everyone should be vigilant with hygiene. WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY AND DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE. THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE ALSO STATES YOU SHOULD STAY 6’ AWAY FROM EACH OTHER.

Thank you for your patience. This is a difficult situation and the utmost precautions must be taken for the safety of our community. If you have any questions, please contact MRPD at 661-792-3187.

Jeff Nickell, MA, District Manager
